New Phone Cases Coming to Disney Parks this Fall

The Disney Parks Blog has announced new phone cases for iPhones and Androids, are coming this fall.

It appears that they will be focusing on iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S III cases. They seem to be using on-demand printing to do these, which is why they are “limited edition.” I suspect that this allows them to quickly adapt to different themes and styles that are coming out, while not having to make a huge commitment to a specific phone model. We all know that phone styles, shapes, and models change quickly and can certainly create an issue for such a niche market.

Disney Mobile Games today debuted Wreck-It Ralph and his arcade universe for iOS devices on the App Store at $0.99. Wreck-It Ralph showcases classic arcade culture with graphics, gameplay and animation made for modern mobile devices.

Wreck-It Ralph players get to experience the adventures of the big screen for themselves. Fans of the film venture forth from Game Central Station through the 8-bit graphic world of Fix-It Felix, Jr., the cy-bug blasting action of Hero’s Duty, and the sugarcoated heights of Sweet Climber.

Iger Says Disney Will Focus Star Wars Brand On Mobile And Social (Not Console)

Twitter and Facebook were buzzing today about Disney acquiring Lucasfilm! I was surprised, but it also makes a lot of sense as George Lucas has been looking to retire. Is there a better company than Disney to take over the control? I hadn’t seen anything in the printed press release, but TechCrunch had a mobile angle on the acquisition…

…”CEO Bob Iger responded that the company is “likely to focus more on social and mobile than we are on console.” However, he added that Disney will look at console games “opportunistically,” using licensing deals to allow other companies to create Star Wars games for cosnoles.”

Android app on Google Play

Official Site: Disney FilmPulse

I recently changed jobs and was assigned a Android phone! I’ll be able to provide some more perspective from an Android perspective, going forward.

One of the first things I did was to start searching for Disney apps in the Google Play Store. One of the first apps to catch my eye was the Disney FilmPulse app. This app is also available on the iPhone, but hey I want to play with the Android. After installing, you have to hop through a few screens, and eventually shows us the current film that Disney has released : Frankenweenie.

The unfortunate reality is that the app is only useful if you are going to see a film at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, CA. The idea is that if you check-in at the theater, you will be able to access games, exclusive content, and likely be awarded a free drink or popcorn at the concession stand. It would seem that they are currently testing it at El Capitan, but are at least considering having it expand to some movie theater chains as well.

Overall, I like the idea of providing added content for a theater going experience. I would hope that a person would use this while they are waiting for a movie to start, but be polite enough to not use it during the actual movie performance. Maybe they could have it somehow detect the audio of the film to disable the app?

Here are some of the official screenshots of the iPhone version, with what the app would have looked like during the Brave viewing.

Just “check-in” to the theater and showtime for the Disney movie you’re about to see, and begin the FilmPulse experience. The FilmPulse app is currently only available for use at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, CA. There may be films that run at the El Capitan that are not supported with a FilmPulse experience. You will only be able to check-in at the El Capitan when watching a supported movie.

Swampy meets Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie

Having been pre-occupied with other life events, I haven’t been spending as much time playing Pirates of the Caribbean: Master of the Seas. I logged in today, and was presented with some ads for 10 Levels of Frankenweenie inspired levels of Where’s My Water?.

It took me a few minutes to realize it was NOT in the paid version, but ONLY in the Free version!

Once you load the video, it gives a short intro video that we are used to seeing before each chapter of the game.

To fit the theme of the upcoming movie, the coloring is shifted to mostly black and white. I think the overall look is really sharp and well done.

I really think they did a good job of “synergy” on this, in promoting the movie with the game! I do think it is a little odd that it is only showing-up in the free version, as you would think the paid version should get it too. I would think they could even get away with having a paid in-game upgrade for additional levels. Do you have any issue with the cross-promotional efforts like this?

Disney.com Gets a Fresh AND Mobile Revamp

On Monday (Oct 1st), Disney.com revealed a fresh new look on their site. Quite a few people were posting and commenting on social media sites, mostly giving favorable remarks to the changes. What seemed overlooked, was that Disney.com now has a refreshed mobile feel as well. The new mobile version of Disney.com is friendly to iPhone/iOS and Android devices alike. I notice that it has a very similar feel to the beta “video.disney.com” site that has been in Beta since earlier this year. It is encouraging to see the direction that they are going with their web strategy. Will “go.com” disappear?

What do YOU think of the new changes?
